23 January 2027
Next: Bo & Nunchaku · 23 January 2027.
Train with Julian Mead Shihan, Chief Instructor of the RKAGB. For ages 16 and over. Attendees bring their own equipment; parking is available on site at Lampton School. Everyone starts with Bo; the afternoon then offers Bo foundations for newcomers and Nunchaku study for experienced practitioners.

What makes it worthwhile
Time to go deeper.
A course creates space to stay with one subject: try it, receive feedback and try it again. Different partners help you examine distance and timing. Questions that are difficult to answer alone become practical work you can explore together.
New to weapons? A course can be a welcoming first taste. Already experienced? Take time to examine a detail, get feedback and find a fresh direction for your practice.

Take more than a sequence home.
A useful correction. A clearer sense of distance. A new training connection. The value of a course is what you can develop afterwards, whether in your own practice, regular classes or teaching.
Instructors can also discuss a focused Kobujutsu visit for their own students.

Before you join
Your questions, answered.
Are Ichigokai courses suitable for beginners?
Suitability depends on the course. The Bo and Nunchaku course on 23 January 2027 has a route for people new to Kobujutsu and a route for experienced practitioners. Contact Ichigokai with your background before reserving.
Do I need to join the weekly club to attend a course?
The January course accepts members and non-members. The fee is £35 for RKAGB members and £40 for non-members. Reserve first; payment details are sent afterwards.
What makes the teaching authentic, and what is its lineage?
Ichigokai is a member of the Ryukyu Kobujutsu Association of Great Britain (RKAGB). Our study follows the tradition preserved by Taira Shinken and Motokatsu Inoue, passed on through Julian Mead Shihan. Read about the lineage, Julian Mead Shihan and RKAGB.
Will I learn a complete system?
You can work progressively through a structured Ryukyu Kobujutsu syllabus, rather than learn isolated demonstrations. Learning the complete system takes sustained study and regular practice. An afternoon course focuses on selected material and gives you a useful next step; it does not teach the whole system in one session.
What does the training cover?
Training brings together foundations, kata, kumite and applications. Foundations develop posture, handling and movement; kata organises techniques into forms; kumite develops distance, timing and control with a partner; applications explore how the techniques work. The material is selected to suit the course and your experience.
