Sensei Balwant Sahans.
Some teachers shape more than the way you move. Sensei Sahans’ contribution to Karate and care for others continue to guide the way we learn and teach at Ichigokai.

He began teaching in Sunbury-on-Thames and later developed clubs in Southall. His study also included Tomiki Aikido, and he brought a broad interest in movement and learning to his Karate teaching.
In 1974, he co-founded the Amateur Shotokan Karate Association with Sensei Jack Warner. In 1998, he formed the Shotokan Karate Organisation.
An influence on Ichigokai
Karate in the service of others.
At Ichigokai, that spirit of service means respectful partner practice, careful explanations and encouragement to help each person keep learning. Experience our Shotokan teaching in a free first lesson.
Sensei Sahans regarded teaching as sewa—selfless service. His commitment to Sarbat da Bhalla, the wellbeing of all, places care for people at the heart of the practice.
At Ichigokai, that influence means valuing yourself, respecting others and contributing to the community in which you learn. Technical ambition and thoughtful behaviour belong together.
