Is this class right for you?

Serious training. Support at every step.

Begin from where you are

You don’t have to get fit before you start. Come in comfortable sports clothes, watch or join in, and we’ll help you take your first steps.

Develop fitness and movement

Work on coordination, balance, strength, flexibility and stamina. Learn purposeful techniques while building a habit that supports an active life.

Build confidence and self-control

Confidence grows through hard work and success. A calm, structured class helps you face manageable challenges, concentrate and respond more thoughtfully.

Learn with personal attention

Clear explanations, individual feedback and respectful partner practice support steady progress. Self-defence principles are taught responsibly; skill and judgement take sustained study.

Your first steps

You are here to learn.

  1. Before you come. Message us to confirm the class. Wear comfortable sports clothes; you do not need to buy a uniform first.
  2. When you arrive. Meet your instructor and the group. Tell us about your experience and anything that may affect your participation.
  3. During the lesson. Watch or take part. We explain the exercises, help you practise and give you time to ask questions.

Your first lesson is a chance to meet Mehar and the group, learn some basic movements and see whether you enjoy the teaching. You can watch before joining in. There is no need to buy a uniform or commit to more classes before trying it.

A class combines kihon (basics), kata (forms) and kumite (partner practice). Movements are explained, you get time to practise and feedback helps you find the next useful correction. You receive guidance at your current level, including when you are returning after a break.

Partner work connects technique to distance and timing. Kata gives you a sequence to revisit and understand more deeply. Together, these build a practice with substance, rather than a workout you soon outgrow.

Your questions, answered.

Can I start Karate as an adult or return after years away?

Yes. Ichigokai welcomes adult beginners and returning students. You start from your current experience, rather than being expected to perform at someone else’s level. Tell us about your background when you enquire.

Do I need to be fit or flexible before starting Karate?

No. You do not need to arrive fit or flexible to begin learning. Tell us about limitations that may affect your participation so we can discuss a suitable starting point.

Can Karate help with confidence and self-defence?

Karate practises coordination, control, awareness, distance and responding to a partner. Meeting challenges gradually can support confidence. Self-defence judgement takes sustained study; a few classes do not guarantee protection.

What should I wear and how much is the class?

Wear comfortable clothes for your first lesson. Ichigokai’s Tuesday class is 7:00–8:30 pm at Oaklands School, Isleworth, for ages 10+. Your first regular class is free; each class after that is £10.
